1.0.1 The isolation layer is arranged between the structural elements above and below the engineering structure to prevent the transfer of seismic energy and used as a new technology to protect the engineering structure against the seismic response and seismic damage. The specification is prepared to apply this technology appropriately to the newly-built and reinforced reconstructed engineering structure.
1.0.2 The specification is applicable to the seismic-isolation design and construction for the buildings and bridge structure at the area with the seismic precautionary intensity of Intensity 6~Intensity 9 and the specification may also be used as a reference to those at the area (>Intensity 9) and the seismic-isolation design and construction for other structures or equipment.
Where various seismic-isolation devices are adopted in the same structure, the specification is applicable to the design and construction of laminated rubber bearing isolator in such structure.
1.0.3 The isolation structure, subjected to design and construction according to the specification, shall not be damaged or affected for the use function when encountering the frequent earthquakes lower than the precautionary intensity; or it is only subjected to the nonstructural damage or slight structural damage and works continuously without repair when encountering the earthquakes of the precautionary intensity at the area; or it shall not be damaged such to endanger the lift or lose the use function when encountering the estimated rare earthquake higher than the precautionary intensity at this area.
1.0.4 Which kind of the isolation structure is adopted is determined by the factors such as seismic precautionary category of engineering structure, precautionary intensity, site conditions, type and service requirements of building structure after comprehensive comparative analysis for seismic-isolation and non-seismic-isolation structural scheme from technical and economic aspects.
1.0.5 The isolation structure shall be designed such to comply with both the specification and the current national standard. In case of bridge with laminated rubber bearing isolator, it shall comply with the current national standard "Code for Seismic Design of Railway Engineering" GBJ 111 and "Specifications of Earthquake Resistant Design for Highway Engineering" JTJ 004.
