This standard specifies the content and structure, marking requirements and marking change requirements of vehicle identification number (VIN).
It is applicable to automobiles as well as incomplete vehicles, trailers, motorcycles and mopeds.
It may also serve as a reference for other vehicles to be marked with VINs.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 15089 and GB 16737 as well as the following apply.
3.1
vehicle identification number; VIN
a group of characters assigned to a vehicle by the manufacturer for identification purposes
3.2
world manufacturer identifier; WMI
the first section of the vehicle identification number (VIN) that identifies manufacturers of vehicles; when being assigned to a certain manufacturer, it serves as the identification marks of this manufacturer; and when the remaining sections of VIN being used together with the world manufacturer identifier, it ensures the uniqueness of VIN for all vehicles manufactured in the world for a period of 30 years
