This standard specifies the content and composition of world manufacturer identifier (WMI). The world manufacturer identifier (WMI) is the first part of vehicle identification number (VIN) in GB 16735.
This standard is applicable to automobiles as well as incomplete vehicles, trailers, motorcycles and mopeds.
It may also serve as a reference for other vehicles to be marked with VINs.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB 16735 and the following apply.
3.1
world manufacturer identifier; WMI
the first part of vehicle identification number (VIN) used to identify the manufacturer of the vehicle. Where being assigned to a certain vehicle manufacturer, it can be used as the identification mark of the manufacturer. Where used together with the rest part of the VIN, it is sufficient to ensure the VIN uniqueness of all vehicles manufactured in the world within 30 years
