This standard specifies the classification, symbols, performance criteria and corresponding test rules of the measuring system, detector and reader of thermoluminescence radiation dose used for personal and environmental monitoring, however, it does not cover the parts of information access and data processing.
The thermoluminescence dosimetry system is mainly composed of the following parts:
a. The passive device refer to dosemeter, it contains one or more detectors showing the thermoluminescence characteristics and is set with some kind of recognition method.
b. The reader is used to heat the detector that has been exposed to the ionizing radiation and to measure out the light output of detector simultaneously so as to measure the corresponding radiation dose.
c. Other optional equipments and operational procedures are used for carrying out necessary auxiliary processes such as annealing and cleaning so as to guarantee the efficiency of the overall system.
d. The data processing procedure is used to convert the measured light output to dose so as to obtain the result.
This standard respectively establishes the clauses on examining the performance of the whole thermoluminescence dosimetry system, detector or reader. Whereas, it does not include special provisions on the examination of the aforementioned Item c and Item d, Item c and Item d will only be taken as a part of indirect examination of the thermoluminescence dosimetry system.
The contents of the performance criteria of Thermoluminescence dosimetry system are most comprehensive, the design makes those systems meeting this standard be able to meet the requirements of modern science and technology levels on the measurement of personal and environmental dose.
The performance criteria used for separate examination of detector only includes those contents that obviously depend mainly on detector instead of the influence of other necessity parts in the examination. Here, the criteria only make sense to detectors but is irrelevant to the rest parts used as one integrated system. And this principle also may be implemented when examining the reader separately.
Even if the detector or reader meets their own performance criteria, it can not be guaranteed that any system including these parts meets the criteria of thermoluminescence dosimetry system.
