1.0.1 The Specification is prepared to make the arrangement of highway traffic signs and markings scientific, regulated and systematic, well satisfy the travel demand of highway users, and promote the safety and flow of highway traffic.
1.0.2 This Specification is applicable to the arrangement of traffic signs and markings for newly-built, expanded and renovated highways.
1.0.3 In case of the same highway constructed by section, the arrangement principles and criteria for the traffic signs and markings shall be kept consistent.
1.0.4 Highway traffic signs and markings shall be arranged considering the surrounding road system, traffic, social environment and natural environment and be harmonized with other facilities. Traffic signs and markings shall be used in conjunction with actual demand, have their denotations mutually coordinated and be readily legible to highway users.
1.0.5 Where a new theory and new technology of arrangement for highway traffic signs and markings are adopted, their safety and service functionality shall be demonstrated.
1.0.6 The arrangement of highway traffic signs and markings shall comply with not only this Specification but also other related current national standards and codes.
2 General Requirements
2.1 General
2.1.1 The classification, color, shape, line, character, graphic and dimension of highway traffic signs and markings shall comply with the corresponding parts of the current "Road Traffic Signs and Markings" (GB 5768).
2.1.2 The arrangement of highway traffic signs and markings shall consider the highway users who are new to surrounding road system as the design object so that they are provided with legible, definite and concise information and adequate time for discovery, reading and response.
2.1.3 Based on road system analysis, highway traffic signs and markings shall be arranged taking comprehensive consideration of such factors as highway condition, traffic condition, meteorological and environmental conditions, and according to the functions of traffic signs and markings, behavioral trait of driver, and requirement for traffic management.
2.1.4 Highway traffic signs and markings shall be inter-coordinated with town traffic signs and markings.
2.1.5 The information provided by traffic signs and markings shall completely be related to traffic management and service.
2.1.6 In case of changed arrangement condition, the traffic sign and marking involved shall be replaced or removed promptly.
2.1.7 The arrangement of traffic sign shall be comprehensive, systematic, continuous and balanced, and shall avoid information overload, information deficiency or content discrepancy and ambiguity.
2.1.8 For continuously arranged longitudinal or transverse traffic markings, drainage joints shall be arranged at interval of 10~15m as required; if other markings may hinder drainage, drainage joints shall be arranged along the drainage direction. The width of drainage joint may be 3~5cm.
2.1.9 For opening access of newly-built highway, traffic signs and markings shall be arranged as specified. During construction or maintenance period, if the highway is kept accessible, temporary traffic signs and markings shall be arranged. After construction is completed, useless traffic signs and markings shall be withdrawn promptly.
2.2 Sign Layout
2.2.1 The layout of traffic sign shall be concise and aesthetic, and provide definite and unambiguous instructions. Traffic signs of the same type should adopt sign layouts of the same type. The traffic sign plates that arranged on the same overhead supporting structure, e.g. portal and cantilever, should have their height and frame specification unified.
2.2.2 Directional signs of highway shall adopt Chinese characters and may be combined with other language, e.g. minority characters or English if necessary. English places shall be expressed by Chinese phonetic alphabet. Unless otherwise specified, the initials of English word (including Chinese phonetic alphabet) shall be capitalized with the remaining lowercased. See Appendix A.1 for an example for the layout of directional sign.
2.2.3 The arrow used on directional sign shall be angled so as to reflect the running direction, as shown in Appendix A.1.
1 When the arrow of portal type sign or attached sign on overpass bridge is to indicate the lane intention or running destination, it shall be oriented downward; when the arrow is to indicate the running direction of vehicle instead of a specific lane, it shall be oriented upward; when the arrow is to indicate exit, the arrow shall be so angled as to reflect the direction of exit lane.
2 As for the directional sign installed on road side, the arrow indicating straight on direction shall be oriented upward and the one indicating turning direction shall be oriented in line with the direction of the turn-to lane. When upward, leftward and rightward arrows coexist both on the upper and lower sides, they shall be arranged following the order of upward, leftward and rightward; the upward and leftward arrows shall be located leftmost and the rightward arrow shall be located rightmost; when the three arrows coexist both on the left and right sides, they shall follow the order of leftward, upward and rightward.
2.2.4 Unless otherwise specified, the distance indicated in directional sign layout should be expressed by 1km and shall be rounded off if not an integer. If the figure at the first decimal place is required, it shall have its height half of the others and its bottom in line with the others.
2.2.5 As for dedicated graphic symbol, the direction of vehicle, e.g. plane, shall be kept in line with the traveling direction.
2.2.6 Unless otherwise specified, the plate and text sizes of various traffic signs shall be determined according to design speed, as shown in Table 2.2.6-1.The use of this table shall meet the following requirements:
