This standard specifies the definitions, technical requirements as well as methods for testing performance of bursting discs and bursting disc devices.
This standard is applicable to bursting discs and bursting disc devices for pressure vessels and pipelines or other confined space to prevent overpressure or excess vacuum. The maximum bursting pressure of bursting discs is not larger than 500MPa and the minimum bursting pressure is not less than 0.001MPa.
2 Definitions
For the purpose of this standard, the following definitions apply.
2.1 Bursting disc device
The bursting disc device is the pressure relief safety device that is composed of such assemblies as the bursting disc (or bursting disc assembly) and bursting disc holder (or support ring). The bursting disc will act (crack or fall off) and discharge the pressure medium immediately when the pressure difference between both sides of the bursting disc reaches the preset value at the preset temperature.
2.2 Bursting disc
It refers to the pressure sensitive device that is in the bursting disc device and is able to act rapidly due to overpressure.
2.3 Bursting disc assembly (also called assemble type bursting disc)
The assembly combined by two or more such parts as the bursting disc, back pressure support, stiffening ring, anticorrosion lining, etc.
2.4 Conventional domed bursting disc
The pressure sensitive device acts like a conventional domed shape. The concave surface of the dome will be located at the high pressure side of the pressure system after installation. The tensile failure will occur on this device when actuating.
2.4.1 Conventional simple domed bursting disc
It refers to the conventional domed bursting disc that with the pressure sensitive device which is directly formed by raw disc without other machining.
2.4.2 Conventional domed slotted lined bursting disc
It refers to the conventional domed bursting disc that with the pressure sensitive device which is composed of the domed disc with seam (hole) and the sealing lining.
2.4.3 Conventional scored simple domed bursting disc
It refers to the conventional domed bursting disc with the pressure sensitive device which its domed surface is machined with score.
2.5 Reverse domed bursting disc
The pressure sensitive device acts like a reverse domed shape. The convex surface of the dome will locate at the high pressure side of the pressure system after installation. When actuating this device, the compression and unstability will act to cause cracking or falling off.
2.5.1 Reverse domed bursting disc with knife blades (or counter-arch alligator tooth demolition piece)
It refers to the reverse domed bursting disc that with the pressure sensitive device which will crack after touching the knife edge (or alligator tooth) when it turns due to unstability.
2.5.2 Counter-arch falling off bursting disc
It refers to the reverse domed bursting disc that with the pressure sensitive device which will crack or fall off along the support edge and will rush out with the high pressure medium when the device turns due to unstability.
2.5.3 Reverse domed scored bursting disc
The reverse domed bursting disc that with the pressure sensitive device which its domed surface is machined with score.
2.6 Flat bursting disc
The pressure sensitive device acts like a flat shape.
2.6.1 Flat slotted lined bursting disc
It refers to the flat bursting disc that with the pressure sensitive device which is composed of the flat disc with seam (hole) and the sealing lining.
2.6.2 Flat scored bursting disc
The flat bursting disc that with the pressure sensitive device which its plane is machined with score.
2.7 Graphite bursting disc
The pressure sensitive device is made from graphite and will crack because of bending or shearing when actuating.
2.8 Bursting disc holder
The fitting piece in the bursting disc device, which has the discharge bore given in the design and is used to fix and support the bursting disc position so as to guarantee the exact actuation of the bursting disc.
2.9 Supporting ring
It refers to the annular ring that is used to fix and support the bursting disc position in mechanical or welding manner so as to guarantee the exact actuation of the bursting disc.
2.10 Back pressure
It refers to the static pressure existing at the discharge side of the bursting disc device. The back pressure will form if other pressure sources exist at the discharge side of the bursting disc device or if the vacuum state exists at the entrance side.
The difference caused by the discharge side pressure exceeding the entrance side pressure is referred to as the differential back pressure.
2.11 Back pressure support
The support bracket in the assemble type bursting disc, used to prevent the pressure sensitive device from emergency destruction due to the differential back pressure.
The back pressure support placed at the concave surface of the conventional domed bursting disc is used to prevent the bursting disc from not stabilizing with convex surface under pressure when differential back pressure appears. This back pressure support may be referred to as vacuum support where the system pressure is likely to be vacuum.
The back pressure support placed at the convex surface of the reverse domed bursting disc is used to prevent the bursting disc from damage with convex surface under pressure when differential back pressure appears.
2.11.1 Opening back pressure support
It refers to the back pressure support that will crack with the explosion of the bursting disc.
2.11.2 Non-opening back pressure support
It refers to the back pressure support that will not crack with the explosion of the bursting disc.
2.12 Stiffening ring
The annular ring in the assemble type bursting disc, jointed tightly with the pressure sensitive device edge in order to reinforce the edge stiffness.
2.13 Sealing lining
The thin film in the assemble type bursting disc, playing a sealing role for the pressure sensitive device.
2.14 Anticorrosion lining (layer)
The cover thin film or coating (plating) that is used to prevent the bursting disc device from corrosion when it is subjected to the corrosion influence.
2.15 Raw disc
It refers to the metal or graphite plain film before being made into bursting disc, which is machined out from the thin metal strip or sheet or from the graphite rod.
2.16 Bursting pressure
It refers to the pressure difference at both sides of bursting discs when the bursting disc device actuating at the set bursting temperature.
2.16.1 Specified bursting pressure
It refers to the bursting pressure value at the design bursting temperature proposed by the purchaser when designing the bursting disc.
2.16.2 Specified maximum (minimum) bursting pressure
It refers to the algebraic sum of the specified bursting pressure and manufacture range plus the performance tolerance.
2.16.3 Allowable bursting pressure range
It refers to the pressure range limited by the specified maximum and minimum bursting pressure. This pressure range is determined according to the operating condition of the protected equipment and the equipment strength. If the actual bursting pressure of the bursting disc is within this range, then the selected bursting disc will neither influence the normal operation even the bursting pressure is too low, nor threat the equipment safety even the bursting pressure is too high.
2.16.4 Test bursting pressure
It refers to the actual bursting pressure value of the bursting disc, measured in the explosion instantaneously during the bursting test. At the same time, the test coincident temperature shall be measured.
